Year of the Priest

What an exciting year! Starting June 19th, Feast of the Sacred Heart, Our Holy Father has dedicated the Year to the Priest, and given St. John Vianney, patron of parish priests, a promotion to patron of ALL priests! The devil once said if there were just 3 such priests as St. John Vianney in the world, he'd pack up and go home! Such a simple priest, but on fire with the love of God... let us plead with him to share his fire, the fire of the Sacred Heart, with all priests. A flame such as this brings with it so much light, it pierces into the dark corners of lost souls, and sets them free. It invigorates with so much zeal, there is no more fatigue, only intense hunger for souls in their care, especially the poor, lost lambs. Oh! It is such an awesome responsibility of ours to pray for our priests. In the vineyard of our church, they are the fruit of our prayer... if we don't do our part in the garden, what will happen? Few Tomatoes, scraggly Corn, small Potatoes, and lots of big weeds! So it is up to us to get to work! If we are lacking priestly vocations, or if our priests don't have the light or time to help us or worse, fall away, it is because we don't ask the Lord of the Harvest to send His Laborers, and we don't pray hard enough in support of those priests we do have. Ask and we shall receive, don't ask, and well...we get what we ask for. PRAY! And let all we know, it is their duty to PRAY!

St. Catherine was greatly troubled over the sorrows that plagued the Church of her day... Who was the true pope? More than one claimed the title... the schism caused chaos amongst the faithful, many priests did little to help the matter, living scandalous lives... But instead of wasting time complaining about them, she applied herself through prayer and sacrifice, begging God to assist His Pope and Priests and make them holy. Let us encourage everyone we know to follow her example! Enough pointing fingers! Lets pray instead! BACK OF CARD has a brief bio of this incredible saint, who was the 23rd of 25 children! What saints are we losing in our day, due to the limited family sizes even in good Catholic families? Also has a quotation from the Dialogue of St. Catherine... God the Father spoke directly to her about the priests of her day, and told her that if they were not holy, it is due to our negligence in praying for them, so it is really our own fault. One of my favorite cards for two reasons, St. Catherine is my patron saint, and because it was through reading this, I stopped casting stones at everyone and learned how to pray for them instead! Implore God to sanctify them, that they may sanctify you! �Pray ye the Lord of the harvest that he send forth laborers into his harvest.� (Matt. ix. 38) �The Church lays much store by the prayers and good works of the faithful, when there is question of conferring Holy Orders. Thus we read in the Acts of the Apostles (xiii. 2, 3) that the Christians of Antioch were fasting and praying when the apostles imposed hands upon St. Barnabas and St. Paul, and ordained them priests and bishops. If the sincere Christian should have nothing more at heart than the advancement of the honor of God, the welfare of the Church, and the salvation of his brethren by good and virtuous priests, then it is for us a grave and urgent duty to offer to God... our prayers and our fasts, to the end that the Holy Ghost may enlighten the bishop, that he may not err in making the choice of priests and ministers for the Church, that he may select the worthy, and drive from the sanctuary the unworthy. Besides this, we should also pray that the Spirit of God may come down with the plenitude of his gifts upon the newly-ordained priests. �

Our Lord has given us the recipe for happiness. "Come to Me." He waits patiently for us on the altars in our churches, promising us food and rest for our starving souls. "Unless you eat My Flesh, you do not have life..." John vi:54. Go! Refresh yourselves on the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus! Tell Him your sorrows, your worries. You will not find a more compassionate ear than that of our Crucified Lord. Jesus promises "Yoke yourself to me and you will find rest." How can this be? Is a yoke not an instrument that binds? Yet in the binding, the load is lightened, because the burden is no longer being carried alone. When we yoke ourselves to Jesus, He takes our crosses upon Himself, and they become light.
